Originating in Hawaii, Poke bowls traditionally feature seafood with rice and vegetables. This recipe doesn't feature seafood, opting instead for beautifully tender steak served in a Teriyaki sauce, topped with scallions and sesame seeds.
This whole meal comes together in about 20 minutes - the time it takes to cook the rice - making it perfect for a weeknight. If you want to put another 5 minutes in, make your own Teriyaki sauce using my recipe which will take it to the next level.
Teriyaki Beef Poke Bowl ingredients
- Beef steak - I like to use a whole steak here, but if you'd prefer you can get beef strips/slices from the supermarket or your butcher. Just make sure it is a tender cut and not stewing beef. The reason I use a whole steak is because it lets me cook it how I like it.
- Salad vegetables - I use cucumber, carrot, radish, lettuce and scallions.
- Sesame seeds bring some crunch and a good flavour which pairs well with beef.
- Teriyaki sauce - I have a recipe for Teriyaki sauce, but you can also use store bought. If you're buying from a store, get a thickened marinade/stir fry sauce, not a dipping teriyaki sauce.
How to make Teriyaki Beef Poke Bowl
- Cook the rice - start by cooking rice according to packet instructions. Feel free to use instant rice if it's easier for you, it works fine. The rice will take around 15-20 minutes to cook.
- Prepare the vegetables - peel the carrots into strips using a peeler. Remove the skin from the cucumber and thinly slice. Thinly slice the radish, slice the scallion and lettuce.
- Cook the beef - if using a steak, grill it or cook it in a skillet to your desired doneness. If using beef strips, add a little oil to a skillet and cook, turning regularly, until cooked to your liking. If you're cooking a whole steak, when it's cooked through, remove any exterior fat and then thinly slice, place into a skillet on medium heat along with any juices that came out of the steak.
- Add teriyaki sauce to the beef, and stir to combine. Warm the sauce through.
- Plate up by placing rice in the bottom of a bowl. Top with salad vegetables, the beef with sauce and place scallions and sesame seeds on top of the beef.
Should I make my own Teriyaki sauce?
Yes, I think you end up with a noticeably better result when you make teriyaki sauce from scratch. Check my Teriyaki sauce recipe. If you're using store bought sauce, make sure you use a thickened sauce designed for marinating or stir frying.
Can I use instant rice?
Instant rice is a convenient option and works well with this dish. Use whichever variety of rice you prefer.
What other vegetables could I add to the plate?
You could try using edamame, red onion, capsicum, pickled ginger, steamed broccoli or any other vegetable that takes your fancy.

- 2 carrots, peeled and then peeled into ribbons using your peeler
- 1/3 iceberg lettuce, finely sliced
- 2 radish, finely sliced
- 2 scallions, finely sliced
- 1/2 cup Teriyaki sauce see note 2
- Rice
- Sesame seeds
- Cook rice according to packet instructions.
- If using steak - Cook beef in a skillet or grill to your liking. Rest on a plate for ten minutes while continuing with the rest of the recipe. After resting the steak, remove any external fat and then thinly slice across the grain before adding to a skillet and heating over medium heat, along with any resting juices.
- If using beef strips - Cook the beef strips in a skillet until done to your liking.
- Add sauce - Add the sauce to the skillet with the beef. As the beef is already cooked, when the sauce is heated through, shut the heat off.
- Plate up - put however much rice you'd like in the bottom of a bowl. Top with the steak, and then place the carrots, radishes, cucumber and lettuce around the bowl. Top the beef with sesame seeds and scallions.
- Beef use lean beef strips or your favourite type of steak for the recipe. I prefer using steak because I can cook it to my liking before adding the sauce. If you choose to use strips, make sure you don't use stewing steak - check with your butcher if in doubt. If you choose to use steak, remove any external fat before slicing.
- Teriyaki sauce - if you use my teriyaki sauce recipe which is linked, half the ingredients and you'll be left with about 1/2 a cup, which is what you need for 4 serves of this recipe.
